Women Empowerment Programs

The remote hill and plain villages in the Doiwala block of Dehradun district where the quality of life of rural women with infants is quite dismal. Economic deprivation, gender and caste discriminations, lack of infrastructural development etc. are some of the factors that have greatly contributed towards increased drudgery of women, poor health status, low awareness and literacy levels etc.

The society has conduct Awareness programme on following issues:

Gender Discrimination

Another area of concern is the prevalent inequalities between men and women. Women are subjected to discrimination in all spheres of life both within as well as outside their households. They have no say in decision making about the household. They enjoy no proper rights and although women perform most of the agriculture operations the economic control still rests with the males. As far as health rights go, the health needs of men and boys are given priority. There is also discrimination between boys and girls relating to nutrition, education and work.
A one day workshop was organized by IRDS in Nakronda village, in which more than 70 participants and five experts participated.

Drudgery of Women

The women in this area work for 16-18 hours a day and have to perform physically demanding tasks such as fetching fuelwood, fodder and water from the forests. As mentioned earlier the outmigration of the males to the plains also contributes significantly towards increasing the burden of women.
A one-day workshop was organized by the organization in Kachunda village in which all the women of the village participated. The chairman of the society has delivered the concept of the workshop after that deep discussion were taken place. On the basis of discussion outcome society has plan to develop different proposals.

Skill Development and Entrepreneurship

Image
IRDS will generate many entrepreneurs who will contribute to the creation and growth of new businesses in Uttarakhand and the region. Entrepreneurship is the key ingredient of economic growth and development, and IRDS will focus explicitly on imparting skills and training in entrepreneurship to aspiring young people in Doiwala block specially.

“We believe in a world of justice and human rights for all. A world where girls can grow up free of fear of abuse. A world where women are treated with the respect and dignity that is their right. A world where poverty is not acceptable. My dear young friends, you can make this your world.”

Health Services

The problem of health care is enormous in rural India. Access to primary health care is inadequate for the majority of rural communities because of the low availability of basic preventive & curative facilities like health care facilities, medicines, clinics, doctors, paramedical workers and community-level health workers at the village level. Often, the community has been observed and termed as the beneficiaries, target group and vulnerable group that has psychologically made them dependent and of receiving attitude. Receiving attitude of the community (free medicine) is the result of previous health services by Govt. & NGOs. From our experience, we felt that implementation of rural health programmes is an urgent need and with the people's participation, we can evolve some sustainable health service approach.

Village Level Dispensary

The society has initiated a Demand based Health Dispensary in the village of Kachunda keeping in mind the need and desires of the villagers. Due to the mountainous terrain village had difficulty accessing Health Services. A retired compounder is taking care of the dispensary. The doctor also visits the village once a week.

Medicine Bank

The society plans to open a medicine bank in all the villages where intervention has been undertaken. A villager will be trained to handle the operation. This will enable the villagers to avail of First Aid facilities and emergency medicines to attend to Minor ailments, correspondence to the Doctors and Pharmaceuti- cal companies are underway and hopefully, this will take proper shape soon.

Distribution of Clothes (School Dress) and Books for Poor Students

The society has conducted a camp at Kachunda, Yamkeshwar Block of Pauri Garhwal. In which the chairman of the society distributed the School Dresses and Books to 60 children who were of very necessitous backgrounds. The organization has a pattern to improve maximum support to poor students.
Book Fair for Students
A week Book Fair was organized by the society in Doiwala. All five schools in the area have visited the fair.
The objective of the fair was:
  • To promote the habit of book reading between students through Fair and Workshop.
  • Sensitize students for good and practical literature on different developmental and environmental issues.
  • Develop interest between the students, research scholars, environmental workers and CBOs for referring good books on particular issues.

Computer Education Program

Image
Education-based knowledge and learning are one of the greatest gifts of mankind to its progeny. Every human being and every child has an absolute right to access and use the knowledge collected since time immemorial to shape his/her personality and contribute to nation-building. Despite the Govern- ment's efforts at universalization of Elementary Education a large number of Indian children, women & men remain illiterate. This affects the efforts to empower people socially, economically, and politically, and the ability to respond to new opportunities or cope with adverse circumstances. In its endeavour to provide quality education, society has promoted Computer Education to children and more than 30 children are learning basic Computer Education at present.
A major goal of society is to improve the quality of basic education. Thus ensuring better caring and learning environments for young children; increasing access to education; keeping children in school longer; and raising levels of academic achievement. IRDS intends that access to education must be made much easier in places which are geographically remote and accessibility to education is difficult. To achieve this, society is promoting demand-based computer schools in remote areas.
In the year 2008 NABARD also supported the centre for another 25 children’s skill development programmes on computer education for a year long. The programme is running smoothly and fruitfully.
